6th Annual Charles Cournoyer Golf Tournament
Are you ready to play golf? After this record-breaking winter I sure am! The 6th Annual Charles Cournoyer Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament is on the 3rd Saturday of May. (the 16th), and it will be held at Pine Ridge Country Club in North Oxford, MA. If you have participated before, you know it’s a day full of golf, good food, good friends, and surprises. Wait until you see our raffle table! Don’t have a team? Don’t worry. We’ll hook you up with one! You don’t even need to know how to play well as it is a scramble format (playing off the best ball). If I can play, you can play!!
For anybody reading about this event for the first time, this is all about finding a cure for mental illness. Our son, Charlie, suffered from schizo affective disorder, an ugly disease of the mind that caused him to have psychotic thinking and behavior. He went from a student studying to be an environmental police officer (UConn Avery Point) to struggling with every day decisions. It’s a disease that he hid so well from even some of his closest friends. Charlie’s life ended on March 30, 2009 as he was speeding away from “somebody who was after him”. He crashed his truck into the woods off Route 395. He could not be saved.
As as the case with so many patients suffering with mental illness, Charlie was ashamed and embarrassed by his illness, knowing he was different. He hated taking the medications that only masked the symptoms and had so many side effects, so he had stopped.
Our dream is that one day a true cure will be found for this debilitating illness. Imagine a world with no more school shooting by mentally impaired people, no more suicides, no more delusional thinking, etc. Most of our students who have received scholarships are working towards careers in the mental health field. One of our young men is pursuing a career in research to cure degenerative brain illness such as Alzheimer’s and schizophrenia. Thus far we have awarded over $10,000 in scholarships to local students.
Please join us for a day full of fun! Please sign up with payment well before the event to secure your place and to allow us to give the chef an accurate head count. We look forward to seeing all of our friends again!
