Summer, Sun & Strawberries
Contrary to popular opinion, (and the sunburns to show for it) Summer is not quite here yet. But if you’re a typical townie, you know this must be true because the Strawberry festival hasn’t taken place yet. The town of Dudley is marking off the start to Summer with their 61st annual Strawberry Festival on Thursday, June 16th. Following tradition, the event will take place on Center Road near Nichol’s College in Dudley from 4pm-7pm.
With no surprise due to the name, the festival is known for their famous strawberry shortcake. You would be amazed by the amount of ingredients it takes to serve the high demand of these shortcakes. According to the festival chairman, Kenny LaFerrier, 16,000 lbs. of California strawberries, 230 dozen homemade biscuits, and 60 gallons of heavy cream are required to serve a whopping 2,500 delicious strawberry shortcakes. If you’ve already tried it, there’s no wonder why. Each shortcake is made with fresh strawberries, a home style biscuit, (I apologize if you’re reading this before lunch) and freshly whipped cream. Sugar free shortcakes are also available upon request.
If you’re a true fan of the festival, you know that every year there is live music. So, you’ve guessed it- you’ll be enjoying live music among all the family fun. The Old Fiddlers Club of Rhode Island, sponsored by the Dudley Cultural Council, will be playing. There’s something for the whole family at the Strawberry Festival. There will be face painting, a dunk tank, and some old fashion cars. A more unique tradition of the Strawberry Festival is the frog jumping contest. That’s right- you supply the speed demon, and watch him hop to the finish line. The sign-ups for the contest is between 4:15-5:50pm. If you’re not racing a little critter, be sure to watch the races take off at 6pm.
The food that is available at the festival is always a big hit among the crowd. There will be fresh hand cut French fries, hamburgers, hot dogs, popcorn and assorted drinks. If you’re in the mood to check out some antiques while at the festival, be sure to check out the Antique & Collectibles sale that The Black Tavern is hosting. Celebrate Summer with the whole family at the Strawberry Festival next Thursday! When you share all the excitement on Facebook remember to tag Dudley Grange #163 and like their Facebook page.
