The PBA announces winner of the 2019 First Fridays Poster Contest

Putnam, CT – With a new season of First Fridays just around the corner, the First Fridays Committee and the Putnam Arts Council are excited to announce the winner of the 2019 First Fridays poster contest. This year’s winner is Putnam resident, Joel Trethaway. Joel’s interpretation of the 2019 theme, Made in America will serve as the cover art for the First Fridays program, which will be distributed locally and throughout the tri-state region.

This year, the First Fridays Poster Contest invited area artists to create an original piece of artwork, inspired by the First Fridays theme. This season’s poster contest challenged participants to celebrate the six chosen cultures that America introduced to the world: American sports, music, theme parks and animation, the 50th Anniversary of the Woodstock Music Festival, ComiCon and Steam Punk. Both adults and student artists participated in this year’s contest. Putnam Arts Council president, Karen Osbrey, stated “We are always so impressed by the level of work from our local artists. It was a difficult choice. We had entries using several mediums and differing interpretations of this year’s theme. But there can only be one winner and Joel’s piece was extremely creative, unique, and perceptive. ”

Joel is a Putnam based graphic designer, and has an Associate degree. He works primarily in Adobe Indesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator, but also has some experience with After Effects and Premiere Pro. Over the last couple of years, Joel has been teaching himself photography and is very fascinated by the many elements there are to explore, especially the technical aspects. Knifemaking is another area of interest, and he hopes to get back into the hobby once some spare time finds its way back to him. Joes is currently employed at a school where he primarily does design and photography, and is grateful to have a place he enjoys working at while supporting his family. Joel’s winning artwork will grace the cover of the go-to-guide for the First Fridays 2019 season. The program includes a brief history of the annual event, vendor information, volunteer opportunities, as well as an overview of what to expect for the upcoming season. Each First Fridays is unique and the program gives attendees a sneak peek at the entertainment, art performances and installations, community art projects, and vendors, as well as events hosted by the downtown shops, galleries and businesses. The committee is grateful for the generosity of local sponsors who recognize the positive impact First Fridays has on the community.

First Fridays 2019 will kick-off on Friday, May 3rd. Be sure to visit for the latest information on First Fridays.
